Episode 36:
This episode is all about taking care of your mental health. Mental health is unfortunately very stigmatized in our culture. This really boggles my mind! If you hear that someone has a heart condition or diabetes, that person is supported & there can be empathy for that person. All too often though, when you tell someone that you have depression or post traumatic stress disorder, or many other mental health challenges, that person is looked upon as someone to be avoided & in validated. It is as though their mental health diagnosis is something they can control. I've heard so many times these invalidating statements: "You need to find joy", or "What do you have to be depressed about... you have everything... a nice home, a wonderful spouse, great kids..." A diagnosis like Depression is very similar to a heart condition diagnosis in that it is something in the body that needs to be addressed and monitored to ensure your best health. You can't just happy your way out of depression. There are times that medication is warranted to manage the depression, the exact same way that heart medications are needed to manage a heart condition. Then why are people with a mental health challenge looked down upon... or even worse called "crazy" or "unbalanced"? When I went into an In Patient Mental Health facility for my C-PTSD, my hubbs asked if I wanted to hide the fact that I was in a mental institution & I told him that I wasn't ashamed of my choice to get the help I so urgently needed. It was a very deep decision that I made to get the care I needed to save my life. We have to make these tough decisions to care for ourselves. The same exact way I would go to the hospital for a heart attack... Anyway in my long winded way... I'm saying.... BE BOLD AND MAKE DECISIONS TO GET THE MENTAL HEALTH CARE YOU NEED TO LIVE A BETTER, MORE FULFILLING LIFE, FILLED WITH MORE JOY & LOVE.
Now we are straight shooters here at the 2 Kinky Women Podcast and we don't blow smoke up your ass... This is strictly my own experience with my own mental health challenges.
